Here's the latest: I had not heard back from the Rev. at the local church. For some reason I thought we were waiting till the event to make a decision. Anyways, I left a message last night , for the Rev., and this morning prior to going to work I will drop by to see him, or leave a note if he is not in. I will follow up during the day. I can't imagine that he has not identified a family. I just don't know why he hasn't called. I told Mary, since you are pressed, that if by tomorrow evening I don't have some feedback from him, she should proceed with the family she knows.
The fact is, unless you know a family yourself, or someone that you know knows one, it isn't easy selecting "a family" out of six thousand. Funds aren't doing that , that I know of. I have yet to hear in any news media, the isolation of particular families for support. I imagine it's being done at a very grass roots level. Unfortunately, or fortunately , I don't know a family personally. As I said, the teacher at our school, who lost a brother, told me he was single (family left behind). I went this weekend to the Family Assistance Center (which helps out the families with red tape) and their hours were not what was published. They were closing just as I arrived. However, I went to offer to volunteer on Thanksgiving and I was referred to the Salvation Army which is giving a Thanks dinner near Ground Zero on Thurs. I then went to Salvation Army and simply picked up a flyer, there was no person to talk to. I need to call today. This may also lead to something.
Yet, my feeling is as stated above , that if the Rev. doesn't come through (which I think he will), Mary's family should be contacted. Or both, as you wish. Give me two more days. I also still think the Windows of Hope Fund would be a noble Fund to give to. I have a little article that was published yesterday explaining how desparate their families are. Unfortunately, they have not called me back regarding selecting "one family". I don't know what to make of that. I am beginning to feel that people are overwhelmed with people coming to them with inquiries. When I went to ask to volunteer this weekend for Thanks, you would have thought I was going to ask for money. People's attitudes, particularly this NYPD "officer", who may not have been one of the Finest, was a bit rude. I think he wanted to leave, or was not happy with his post that day.
Well that's the status. Hope all is well. I'll let all of you know.
Take care, Margarita
